We became Extinction Fighters at the “Love Your Locals” day at Werribee Open Range Zoo on Thursday 7 Sep. We were one of 11 schools participating. We gave one of the new EBBs (Eastern Barred Bandicoot) a new name. We chose ‘Cherish’ because we love the EBBs. We have had the opportunity to name 3 other bandicoots over previous years – Cooryong, CoCo and Crash. The Zoo currently has 30 EBBs in their breeding pens, as well as Maremma dogs in training to protect the EBBs.

The Common Cents challenge is to collect 300 – 5cent pieces. Classes have been given a poster to mark off the coins collected. Money raised will support the Werribee Open Range Zoo’s Threatened Species Program for the Eastern Barred Bandicoot. Werribee Primary School has supported the Love Your Locals program for several years.

Money will be collected on Thursday 8th June.

Each completed 5 cent poster is enough money to care for an Eastern Barred Bandicoot for one month.

GRIP Leadership Conference

Last Friday was a very exciting day for all of the captains. We were lucky enough to attend the GRIP Leadership conference in Melbourne. We had the opportunity to meet with student leaders from other schools in Victoria. Through fun & interactive activities we learnt about what it takes to be a great leader. We all generated ideas for how we can improve Werribee Primary School and look forward to implementing some of our ideas soon. Thankyou to Miss Scarrott and Miss Van Ravenstein for taking us.

The BEST (Environment Student Leaders and Reps) had a fun filled day at the Werribee Open Range Zoo on Thursday. The purpose of the day was to raise awareness of the extinction of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot in the wild. The Zoo is doing all it can to ensure its survival through captive breeding and increasing community awareness.

EBBEBB SONG:
I’m a Little Bandicoot
Short and Stout
Here are my stripes and Here is my Snout
When the Foxes and Cats come
Hear me shout

Graduation was such a blast, I got to catch up with my friends and parting until 7:00pm, there were also delicious party food that we got to eat, I saw students smile while dancing, there was joy and laughter throughout the room, I felt a little bit sad because I knew that next year we will be divided from each other. When it reached 7:00pm all the parents came rushing in while guided by the children. When it was time for our graduation we all sit down to begin, we had some important visitors that came and gave out awards for some students. After, each student in a class was called out one by one to receive their certificate while their peers cheered them on. A visitor from Werribee Primary School came to our school to give a scholarship to three students when he called out the names I was surprised to hear my name called out, while I walked to the stage my friends and the whole of year 6 cheered me on. I was so excited to receive a scholarship, my 2 friends Jake and Patrick were also rewarded a scholarship. The candle ceremony was near so we all got in position, Sadness overruns my body because some of these people I will never see again next year. After all the candles were lit Miss Scarrott counted down from three and we all blew out the fire from the candle. Finally I say goodbye to my friends and teachers before I went home. This night will forever be in my memory.

From 140 applications, Werribee Primary School was chosen as one of three finalists in the Energy School of the Year awards. We are very proud of our achievements in Sustainability. Our BEST school leaders and representatives, Larni, Georgie, Moeni and Day Day conducted a student led presentation at the Awards day today. This included interactive activities to help other schools reflect on their own sustainability practises and also showcasing changes Werribee Primary School has made throughout our journey to become a 5 Star ResourceSmart School.

House Captains @ Leadership Day

3

Posted by Miss Scarrott | Posted in Sport, Student leadership | Posted on June 17, 2015

On Tuesday 16th of June Mrs Staehr took Joel, Jake, Tom, Conor, Lani and Monique to Etihad Stadium and Witten oval for a Sport Leadership day. We learnt a lot of new things about football and leadership. Jordan Roughead the Vice-captain of the Western bulldogs talked to us about his leadership. He told us that when he was in year 11 he really needed to step up in his leadership because people were looking at him playing football. When he was in year 12 he was drafted to the Western Bulldogs and became a Vice Captain of the Western Bulldogs.

We saw some other Western Bulldog players and we saw retired players like Jason Akarmanis who became a Hall of Fame player last week and a statue of Tony Liberatore at The front of Witten oval. We had a lot of fun at Witten oval and at Etihad Stadium and it was a great experience and learning about leadership. Below we have short movie trailer of yesterday we hope you enjoy.
